La Hipótesis de Deriva Continental fue propuesta por Alfred Wegener en 1912. Para esta postulación tomó en consideración distintos factores geográfico, geológicos y biológicos.

Observó como la forma de los continentes separados por el Atlántico, principalmente Sudamérica y Africa, coincide y encajan casi en su totalidad, no solo en la forma de sus costas sino también en los bordes de plataformas. Postuló que probablemente, en algún pasado remoto, estos continentes hayan estando unidos.Wegener también pudo reconocer la presencia de especies fósiles en común entre los continentes ubicados a ambos lados del Atlántico. Sugirió que la razón por la que las mismas especies fosiles se encotraron en continentes separados actualmente por un océano, es que en el pasado estos formaban uno solo, donde habitaban determinadas especies, que luego de la separación de las masas de tierra, estas mismas especies quedaron divididas. La presencia de cordilleras y rocas de origen y edades similares entre continentes también se convirtió en otro factor de peso para su teoría.
