AQUATIC SCIENCE 2) What happens between 4 and 0 °C? Why is this important?
At this temperatures is when water increases in salinity and the high altitudes cause the
oxygen-nitrogen bonding to break.
The hydrogen bonds expand so that they achieve the greatest distance from each other,
and this results in hexagonal ice crystals. It also results in spaces in between the ice
molecules, which is what makes the solid phase of water less dense than the liquid phase.
The oxygens separate from the hydrogens creating a point where the water will boil and
break its molecule.
The hydrogen bonds contract so that they achieve the smallest distance from each other,
and this results in tetrahedral liquid water.
The hydrogen bonds are stronger than ever creating the least amount of surface tension
and allowing for molecules to evaporate.
