Biologist A is trying to establish the density of Acorn Woodpeckers in the Christopher Creek area in Payson, AZ, an area of about 8 Km2. He knows that Acorn Woodpeckers invest high parental care, so every nest is supported by two adult Acorn Woodpeckers. Counting nest sites is a perfectly reasonable way to estimate density of this species. He has a cabin and counts nests on his 3-acre property (ca. 0.01 Km2). He determines that there are six Acorn Woodpecker nests. He concludes there are 2 Acorn Woodpeckers/acre in the Christopher Creek area. Biologist B is also working to learn the density of Acorn Woodpeckers in the same area, but she does not agree with the estimate made by Biologist A. What should Biologist B do to get a better estimate of this species of woodpecker?
