A. Living organisms in the environment. •Explain the role of decomposers (bacteria and fungi) in converting complex compounds to simple substances. E. g. action of mould on bread, production of biogas from domestic organic waste. (key words: hydrolysis, enzyme, nutrient cycling) • Explain, with examples, the impact of the continual re-use of materials in nature. NB: the role of decomposers in the Carbon cycle, Nitrogen cycle- nutrient cycling and the Water cycle. · Discuss the importance of and difficulties encountered in recycling manufactured materials. (Consider biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials, collection, transport and storage, economic factors).
B. Cell •Explain the importance of cell specialization in multicellular organisms. •Explain the hierarchy of cells, tissues, organs; organ systems, organism, population; community, ecosystem. · Name and give the functions of different tissues found in plants and animals. · Identify the part of the light microscope. Movement into and out of cells · Define the terms diffusion, osmosis and active transport. For each term give its importance in living organisms and examples of each in both plants and animals.
