This process (photolysis) releases protons that build up in the thylakoid membrane to produce a proton pump that generates ATP. At the end of the light dependent reactions, ATP and NADPH molecules are produced.

In the light independent stage which occurs in the stroma of the CHLOROPLAST, the ATP and NADPH molecules produced in the light stage are used to power and reduce carbondioxide (CO2) to synthesize sugar (glucose).
