According to the endosymbiotic theory, a host cell ingested symbiotic bacteria, which specialized into mitochondria or chloroplasts. The evidence for this theory is that mitochondria and chloroplasts, like bacteria, have their own circular DNA. They also have their own transcriptional and translational machinery.
