The food is firstly taken in and broken down through mastication(chewing). Then, the food is broken down by an enzyme,  enzyme amylase, also called ptyalin, which breaks down starch into simpler sugars.The normal pH range for saliva is 6.2 to 7.6. While food is being chewed, saliva chemically processes the food to aid in swallowing. The digestive system is made up of the alimentary canal. Alimentary canal is the long tube of organs.

Chemical digestion is breaking down the food into simpler nutrients. Chemical digestion begins in the mouth when food mixes with saliva. Amaylase enzyme begins the breakdown of carbohydrates.
