Modern genetic technology can be used to modify the genomes of living organisms, a process known as genetic engineering. Genes of one species can be modified, or genes can be transplanted from one species to another. Most transgenic organisms are generated in the laboratory for research purposes. For example, “knock-out” mice are transgenic mice that have a particular gene of interest disabled. By studying the effects of the missing gene, researchers can better understand the normal function of the gene. Transgenic organisms have also been developed for commercial purposes, including food crops like soy and corn that have been genetically modified for pest and herbicide resistance.

Transgenic organisms can be engineered to benefit society. Choose ALL the statements that show the societal benefits of transgenic organisms.

Golden rice is modified to produce beta-carotene, the precursor to vitamin A to prevent vitamin deficiency in impoverished areas.
Transgenic animals are being created to provide organs for transplantation, decreasing wait time and rejection rates.
Transgenic mice are currently being used as models to study heart disease, arthritis, anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, aging, and Parkinson’s disease.
Genetic engineering is producing disease- and drought-resistant plants that require fewer environmental resources, such as water and fertilizer.
Genetically modified foods have less risk of allergens than non-GMOs.

In tossing one coin 10 times, what are your chances for tossing a head? a tail? 2. in tossing one coin 100 times, what are your chances for tossing a head? a tail? 3. in tossing one coin 200 times, what are your chances for tossing a head? a tail? deviation = ((absolute value of the difference between expected heads and observed heads) + (absolute value of the difference between expected tails and observed tails)) divided by total number of tosses. this value should always be positive. 4. what is the deviation for 10 tosses? 5. what is the deviation for the 100 tosses? 6. what is the deviation for 200 tosses? 7. how does increasing the total number of coin tosses from 10 to 100 affect the deviation? 8. how does increasing the total number of tosses from 100 to 200 affect the deviation? 9. what two important probability principles were established in this exercise? 10. the percent of occurrence is the obtained results divided by the total tosses and multiplied by 100%. toss the coins 100 times and record your results. calculate the percent occurrence for each combination. percent head-head occurrence: percent tail-tail occurrence: percent head-tail occurrence:
