Mitosis is a normal process by which our body replaces the somatic cells it has lost. It's controlled by so many genes, including proto-oncogenes, apoptotic genes and tumour suppressor genes, and by DNA repair mechanisms.

If any mutation occurs to any of those genes the cell will be more likely to divide uncontrollably and cause cancer. Our body naturally fights off those mutations and our immune system mostly kills any abnormal cells. However, with the accumulation of mutations over time, the cell is more likely to escape our body's mechanisms and develop into a tumour.
