The surface area to volume ratio of a cell affects the efficiency of diffusion which means that it takes longer for substances to get to the center of the cell. In simpler words, cells need to be able to obtain nutrients from their environment as well as to eliminate waste from themselves so increasing the size of a cell would increase its surface area and thus its demand for nutrients increases.
