Dangers in your home: knowing how to handle household products containing hazardous materials or chemicals can reduce the risk of injury. It is important to store household chemicals where children cannot access them. Remember that common products such as aerosol cans of hair spray and deodorant, nail polish and nail polish remover, toilet bowl cleaners and furniture polishes are hazardous materials. Other hazardous household products include:
~Cleaning products
~Automotive products like antifreeze or motor oil
~Items like batteries, mercury thermometers and florescent light bulbs
~Flammable products: kerosene, home heating oil, propane tanks and lighter fluid
~Workshop or painting supplies: paint thinners and turpentine
~Herbicides and insecticides
Juan and his friend Sam have been painting Juan's bedroom and they have created a great mural on one wall. In order to this, the boys have a collection of paints, solvents, brush cleaners as well as rags used for clean up. It has taken them almost a week to complete the project, so they have stored all their supplies in a crate in Juan's closet.
