Adenosine triphosphate commonly known as ATP, is a molecule used to carry and release energy in living cells. ATP supplies energy for cellular processes in the body by donating one of its phosphate groups in a process called PHOSPHORYLATION. Some of the cellular processes that can involve ATP are as follows:Photosynthesis: ATP is required by plant cells to synthesize their food. Cell division: All cells undergo division and hence, require energy in form of ATP for it to occur. Muscle contraction: Animal cells possess muscle cells and use energy for its contraction. Cellular respiration: Glycolysis of cellular respiration uses 2ATP before producing ATP. DNA replication: ATP is required for the DNA of cells to replicate itself. This is necessary to occur prior to cell division.
