Every person has two copies of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. A person must inherit two copies of the CFTR gene that contain mutations -- one copy from each parent -- to have cystic fibrosis. People who inherit one copy of the CFTR gene that contains a mutation and one normal copy are considered CF carriers. CF carriers do not have the disease but can pass their copy of the defective gene on to their children.
