Afarmer has noticed that his soybean plants produce more beans in some years than others. he claims to always apply the same amount of fertilizer to the plants but he suspects the difference in crop yield may have something to do with the amount of water the crops receive. the farmer has observed that the soybeans on his farm usually receive between 0 to 0.5 inches of water per day, but he is unsure of the optimal amount of water with which to irrigate.

use the scientific method to address the farmer’s needs:
in data table 1, state a research question that will directly address the farmer’s problem.
conduct online research on "soybean crop irrigation." record pertinent information and the web sites you used in data table 1. do not copy text directly from the sources, as this is considered plagiarism. (note: scientists rarely use websites as educational resources because information can be incorrect. however, for purposes of this exercise, an internet search will be acceptable.)
construct a testable hypothesis. the hypothesis should be phrased as a complete sentence, able to be supported or refuted by an investigation. record the hypothesis in data table 1.
design an experiment to test the hypothesis. be as specific as possible in describing what will be observed or measured. record your study design in data table 1.
consider the following:
a pharmaceutical company has developed a new weight loss drug for women. preliminary tests show that the drug seems to be fairly effective in about 75 percent of test subjects. the drug company thinks that the drug might be most effective in overweight women, but they are unsure to whom they should market the product.

use the scientific method to address the pharmaceutical company’s needs:
in data table 1, state a research question.
conduct online research on "body mass index" categories. record pertinent information in data table 1.
construct a testable hypothesis and record the hypothesis in data table 1.
design an experiment to test the hypothesis. be as specific as possible in describing what will be observed or measured. record your study design in data table 1.

Mike was adopted, and his biological family history is unknown. although he is healthy, he would like some understanding of his genetic makeup, including potential health risks and genes that he could pass on to his children. mike has heard about commercial laboratories that can compare segments of your dna to those of people with common hereditary diseases in order to give you some idea of how susceptible you are to the diseases. the results of these types of tests are highly inconclusive. if mike's dna showed that he shares similarities in a segment of dna with people who have a given disease, his chances of developing that disease or passing it on to his children may be slightly elevated, but they are not 100 percent. these tests can cost more than $2,500 and are not covered by many insurance companies. do you think that mike should undergo the genetic tests? explain your answer. what are the potential pros and cons of having such tests done? describe how the availability of these genetic tests might affect the frequency of genetic diseases in individuals and populations.
