Seismic waves are waves of energy that travel through the Earth's layers, and they travel as a result of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, magma movement, large landslides and large man-made explosions that give out low-frequency acoustic energy. Seismic waves are also called compressional or longitudinal waves, they compress and expand (oscillate) the ground back and forth in the direction of travel.

Types of Seismic Waves

There are three types of seismic waves

1) P-waves,

2) S-waves and

3) Surface waves.

P-waves and S-waves are sometimes called body waves.
