Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease and salty skin is one of the symptoms of the disease. The cells that secrete mucus, digestive juices and sweat are  affected. These secretions normally function to provide lubrication but in people with cystic fibrosis the secretions get thick and sticky.

This blocks passages and ducts in the pancreas and lungs. The chances of survival of cystic fibrosis patients were low in the 80s. But now the situation has changed due to the Advancements in medicine.  

Infants can be screened for cystic fibrosis in the first month. Early diagnosis helps in taking proper treatment and giving appropriate care. People with cystic fibrosis can live till the age of 40 and more today.
