How does access to sunlight affect the biodiversity of a river ecosystem

Areas with more access to sunlight will have more brush and plant life while areas with less access to sunlight will either grow less or grow differently, i.e. certain mosses that don't require as much sun as regular green leafy plants. This will create pockets of high and low biodiversity accordingly.
