during the lunar eclipse or also known are the red moon, the moon is fully engulfed in the earths shadow, or umbra. this is because the moon is BEHIND the earth. another way to remember is this little path called the red path or lunar path.

first is the sun, which is the source of light and heat, then there is the earth, this is what we live on, then is the moon, the moon enters this eclipse faze near a 75 degree angle just behind the earth, then leaves the umbra around 110 then the penumbra around 140 degrees.

usually this is during the night so it is rarely seen.
