A food chain is a linear sequence of transfer of food and energy when one organism is consumed by another organism in an ecosystem. The primary source of energy for the food chain is the sun. The producers are the plants and other autotrophic organisms which produce their own food by the process of photosynthesis which requires the light energy from sun which is the initial form of energy that is necessarily required by the plants. The plants and other autotrophs are consumed by primary consumers which are simple herbivores like mice, rat, sheep and deer. This way the light energy trapped by the plants is distributed to all the higher trophic levels of the organisms when one organism is fed by another organism.
