There is a phenomenon that occurs in the natural world, and it is known as convection. This is where hot air (or rather the atoms in the air get hotter) and they spread out more because of the high temperature meaning they have more energy. In doing this, they rise because they have essentially become lighter. Meanwhile, below it, cold air that is sinking replaces that space that is now "empty", and this creates wind.

At the coast, it can get very windy because as the land heats up, it heats the air above the land, making the air rise. This then causes the air above the sea to rush to the land to fill that space, because the water is not as hot as the sand. During the night however, when the land cools down very quickly, the water retains the heat that it got from the sun during the day, and the wind direction is reversed. The air above the sea is now warmer and rises, and the cold air above the land rushes to fill the space.
