In humans, process which are involved in variation in traits of humans are mutations, random selection of homologous chromosome in daughter cell which is meiosis, random selection of genes and random fertilization.

Mutation is the change in nucleotide sequences in the normal genetic material which leads to the change in phenotype.

While random segregation and selection of chromosome from the homologous pair to come in a daughter cell is totally random. And these different gametes from one type of germ cells are produced during meiosis.

The random fertilization of these different gametes leads to variation in phenotype of a person.
