Some atoms gain or lose electrons during a chemical reaction. Positive ions are those that form when atoms loses an electron (a –ve charge). The ion formed when an electron is lost or donated is called a cation. When electrons are gained, an Anion is formed. Cations have net + charge where as Anions have a net negative charge.

When an atom gains or loses an electron, it attains a net charge and becomes an ion. When an atom loses an electron, the resulting ion is called cation. When an atom gain an electron, the resulting ion is called an anion. Thus, cations have a net positive charge, while anions have a net negative charge.

Protons and neutrons are packed inside the atom's nucleus so they can't be transfer to other atoms.
