Roots can be used for absorbing both water and nutrients from the surrounding soil. It can also be useful for keeping the tree anchored down in place to keep it from falling in heavy winds or land slides. Tree roots also serve great purpose for food and shelter for insects and small animals. Lastly, they are strong enough to break large rocks over time as they grow.
