Classification by Use- restoration, crowns, bridges, impressions, dies, casts, models, cements, temp. materials, pt. dnetures, polishing materials.

Classification by location fabrication:

direct restorative materials

- restorations constructed directly in oral cavity

indirect restorative materials

-restoration fabricated out of mouth, harmful processing conditions

-fabricated on replica (die or cast of patients teeth

classification by longevity of use :

permanent restorations

- no future plan for replacing

- permanent is misnomer

temporary restorations

- placed with future plan for permanent restoration

-short duration of use (up to one month)

interim restorations

-long-term temp. restoration used to stabilize current condition

allowed for the prediction of the properties of missing elements.
