What is the relationship between why an artist made something and that work means to the rest of us?

An artist usually makes up something because they have a story to tell behind it or they are drawing a piece because it’s a blob of their emotions. When people look at their work, they’re assuming a story behind it and come up with things to fit into it although it may not be the artists story, it still means something.
