It was designed, designed and built by Filippo Brunelleschi, who began with this work the Italian and Florentine Renaissance in architecture. The interior consists of two caps or domes, one inside and one outside, built with brick arranged in the shape of a fishbone. They are connected to each other by means of an inner reticle formed by ribs, which supports the dome and helps in its stability. The gap between the two caps forms a space through which you ascend to the lantern. The exterior of the drum is lined with polychrome marbles and an incomplete balustrade that was only built on one of its faces. The inner face of the dome is decorated with frescoes and tempera paintings that represent the Last Judgment.
