The Koguryo Kingdom

Because it neighbored the Buddhist Chinese state of Northern Wei, Koguryo was the first of the three kingdoms to welcome Buddhism, in 372 CE. The Koguryo kings commissioned works of sculpture and architecture dedicated to the Buddha. Buddhist-themed murals were popular. Koguryo styles of mural painting spread throughout East Asia and influenced artists in other countries, such as Japan.

The design of Koguryo tombs made them very accessible. As a result, little funerary art survives that has not been taken by looters and thieves. But in over 80 excavated Koguryo tombs, brightly painted scenes of everyday life, portraits, and mythical creatures have been found on the walls. Koguryo tomb painters painted either directly onto the stone wall or onto a fresco-like lime plaster base.
