First make a chart where you take note of the similarities and differences between Edward Darley Boit’s watercolor Venice: Afternoon on the Grand Canal and Canaletto’s oil painting The Grand Canal Near Rialto Bridge. Then take note of the different processes and materials used in oil and watercolor painting. Then, write an essay of 3-5 paragraphs that discusses the different effects that can be achieved by using oil paint vs. watercolor using the two paintings as examples. How does the use of watercolor or oil change your perception of the scene? In your essay discuss the different processes and materials that are employed for each. Be sure to include descriptions of different areas of each composition that support your points.
