THE CRITIQUE PROCESS IN 4 STEPS Each step should be at least 1 paragraph.
A paragraph should be AT LEAST four sentences in length.

Step 1: Description
For this step, you simply describe what you see in the artwork. You want to explain it in as much detail as possible so that someone who hasn’t seen the artwork would be able to visualize it clearly. Your description should include:
The subject(s) or images in the artwork (if there is one.)
How many images are present
The color(s) you see
The shapes you see
The textures you see
The size of the images (in relation to the other images, areas or shapes)
Where on the picture plane images and colors are located (ie: bottom right, middle, lower left, etc.)
The type of medium(s) used to create the artwork
Any other details that would help someone be able to clearly visualize the artwork.

Step 2: Description Analysis
For this step, you must break up the artwork into the elements and principles of art used, and tell how they work together. You must use AT LEAST 4 elements and principles. BE SPECIFIC!!! For example:
The focal point, or dominant aspect of the artwork is the , which is created by .
Unity is created by .
A texture is created by the use of .
I see a type of color scheme which creates contrast (or unity…depends which type.)
A pattern is created by the repeated shapes.
There seems to be a lot of emphasis on because of .

Step 3: Interpretation
For this step, you must tell about how this artwork makes you feel and/or what it reminds you of and why. You MUST GIVE AT LEAST 3 EXAMPLES. You should be able to clearly explain WHY it creates this feeling for you. Tell stories. Elaborate. Be descriptive. There is no wrong answer here as long as you CLEARLY EXPLAIN WHY! Again, use the colors, images and medium(s) to guide how and why it makes you feel the way it does.

Step 4: Evaluation
For this step, you will tell about why you feel this is a great piece of art, or a not so great piece of art, using statements from your previous 3 paragraphs. (If you wrote the other 3 paragraphs correctly,) you should be able to simply choose 1 sentence from each of the previous steps, and talk about them again here….reiterating your opinion of the artwork.
In other words, you are basically saying,
“I think this artwork is great, given the (insert example here from paragraph 1 as to why you think this is great.)”

“Also, the way the artist (insert example here from paragraph 2.)”

“The other reason I give this four stars is because of the way (insert from paragraph 3.)”

“In conclusion, this artwork is fantastic because (sum it up here.)”
