When Diego Rivera finished the murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1933, some
viewers lodged protests about the scene in the upper right of this view. The artist
described it as a tribute to modern science, as a baby is being vaccinated by medical
personnel, using a vaccine developed from animal sources, as scientists work above.
On the other hand, some people regarded this as a sacrilegious version of the story of
Christ in the manger, with the animals, Mary and Joseph, and the three kings who
brought gifts. Do the protesters have a point?
