An Atlas, by definition, is a set of maps or geographical charts. However, the term also applies to a data set on a given subject, systematically organized and serving as a reference for building information according to the user's need.

The word Atlas is inspired by Greek mythology, which tells the story of the Titan Atlas. Atlas is said to have taken the lead in the battles of Kronos and the Titans against the gods of Olympus, infuriating Zeus. As punishment, he was forced to carry the world on his back forever.

Because of this, the word atlas is almost always associated with some kind of support: in the spine, for example, the first vertebra is called an atloid because it holds the head. Atlas can also designate a male figure that serves as a supporting column in buildings.
