This essay consists of four sections that will be completed by analyzing a piece of art by a famous artist. After carefully examining “Sandwich” by Wayne Thiebaud, you will write using the four steps of art criticism to explain your thoughts on the painting. 1. Description: In this step, everything that you notice in the painting will be discussed. Think of the elements of art (line, color, value, shape, form, space and texture)

2. Analysis: This is a deeper description of the artwork. For this step, think about the principles of art (pattern, balance, emphasis, contrast, harmony, unity, movement, proportion, scale)

3. Interpretation: What is the meaning of this painting? (in your opinion) What is the mood of this painting? What is the artist trying to say in his creation of this work?

4. Judgment: Your determination as to whether (or not) you feel the artist was successful in creating this work by referring to the three steps above.

In total, this essay should be at least 250 words. That comes out to approximately 60 words for each section of the assignment.
