Your critique will be broken down into four sections as you learned in the unit: Describe (answer at least three)
Who is the artist of this piece? (Name who made the piece of art you are looking at.)
What is the title of this piece? (Does this piece have a name? If so, what is it?)
When and where was this piece created?
What is the subject matter of the piece/What is it about? What is the scene you see?
What objects are in the piece? (people, trees, hills, cars, buildings, etc.)
What medium was used to create the piece? (Do you remember this from our very first unit? Remember, mediums are what the artist used to create the piece, such as pencil, marker, tempura paint, oil paint, etc.)
Analyze (answer at least three)
How was color used in this piece?
What effect does color have on the piece?
How has the artist used shapes within the work of art?
In what ways has the artist used line throughout the piece?
How has texture been used throughout the piece? Has the artist just used the illusion of texture using lines and shapes or actual texture?
How has the artist used light in this piece? Has the artist used light tints/shadows or light and dark values in a different way?
Are there points of emphasis in the piece of a specific scene, figure, or movement?
Interpret (answer at least two)
Try to talk about the artist’s statement. Describe what you personally believe the artist is trying to say through their work of art.
What feelings do you get when looking at this particular piece? What parts of the piece cause you to have those feelings?
Does the art remind you of personal experiences?
Evaluate (answer at least two)
Why do you think the artist created this particular piece?
What parts of the artwork or qualities make you feel as if the artist did a good job?
What parts of the artwork or qualities do you feel the artist could improve on?
Does the piece seem original (original is another way of saying something is unique or one of a kind)? Why or why not?
Please be sure to answer the required amount of questions for each section. You do not have to address ALL of the questions suggested, but each section specifies how many you must respond to. You may choose which questions you address.
The question prompts are listed under each section. These questions are to help guide you in your critique and ensure that you are examining all aspects of the chosen art.
You may choose to write your critique on a word processing program or a slide show presentation.
You must answer questions and respond to each section of the critique using full sentences—not bullet points.
You must include photos of the art that you choose throughout your written critique. It would be helpful to include pictures of any specific aspects of the art that you talk about in that section.
You will be graded on your how well you address the required questions prompts, the flow and style of your writing, and the mechanics of your writing. For more details on how you will be graded, please refer to the rubric below.
