One of the techniques used to create spaces is the superposition where from it the illusion of space and depth is created. Overlapping occurs when an opaque object covers part of a second object. The object in front seems to be closer. When a small number of shapes overlap and it is the only way the artist uses to express depth, it is said that the composition has little deep or defective space.

These spaces are divided into Foreground, middle ground and background. In the foreground things will usually seem to be drawn or painted bigger since realistically that's what would be closer to you. The middle ground is usually were your main focus would be. Everything will be a little smaller from what the foreground was. The background this is were everything is going to be painted or drawn smaller cause realistically this would be the scene furthest from you. One technique artist use to create space is placement, like things placed higher on the page will appear further away.
