In the late nineteenth century, Italian scholar Giovanni Morelli ( 1816–1891) developed a new approach to art evaluation. It was called connoisseurship. Morelli proposed that art should be evaluated by the small details, or peculiar elements within a composition. Hence, an art evaluator could diagnose any artist’s work by minutely examining its peculiar characteristics. These peculiarities helped connoisseurs identify the work of an artist, even if it was unsigned.
