Read the following passage.

[1] Oprah Winfrey grew up impoverished. She was born to an unwed mother and spent much of her childhood alone while her mother worked long hours as a housemaid. Young Oprah was left to navigate the dangerous, gritty streets of Milwaukee, Wisconsin on her own. Oprah was an intelligent child with a great desire to learn. However, she found the schools in her neighborhood dangerous and often discouraging. Despite these challenges, Oprah finished high school and eventually, with the help of a scholarship from a beauty pageant, was able to go on to college and begin her successful career. She began as a journalist and later did work as a talk show host, actress, and producer.

[2] In 2006, Oprah Winfrey visited South Africa, a nation on the continent of Africa. She met with Nelson Mandela, a close friend of hers. Mandela was a civil rights activist who was imprisoned for nearly three decades for his efforts to end Apartheid, a system of racial segregation that was enforced in South Africa from 1948 to 1994. After his release from prison, Mandela was elected South Africa's first black president in 1994. After his release from prison, Mandela for her program, and the two discussed the myriad issues facing black South Africans. Although segregation was no longer the law of the land, black citizens still suffered from poverty, racism, and lack of access to education.

[3] Of particular interest to Oprah, because of her own experience as a child, was the plight of young, black, South African girls. In her conversations with Mandela--and as she traveled through the area and spoke with different people--Winfrey realized that there were few real opportunities for girls with great potential to achieve their goals. Even girls who showed exceptional leadership potential could not access the education and training they needed to realize that potential.

[4] After consulting with Nelson Mandela, along with community and women's rights leaders in South Africa, Winfrey established The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. The Academy opened in 2007 and provides a program that focuses on community service. Students work with their communities and with non-profit organizations to devote thousands of hours a year to service.

[5] For example, in 2010, 225 students worked with Habitat for Humanity (an organization that provides permanent homes for families in need) to build 11 homes in just two days. The students have also started programs to raise awareness of breast cancer in South Africa, established school gardens to help provide food for children at primary schools in poor communities, and have built playground equipment at an orphanage. Additionally, they develop and present AIDS awareness programs to young people, which is especially important effort as AIDS is rampant in South Africa and very little educational resources are available.

[6] Today, the Leadership Academy continues to grow and thrive. With a current enrollment of almost 400 girls in grades 8-12, the school is slowly supporting a generation of South African women who are prepared to go on to higher education, assume leadership positions in their communities, and provide role models for other girls who yearn to escape the bonds and limits of poverty and racism.
