Tuners and pan makers are often the same person. Tuning is done largely by ear and
there is a standardized system of tuning. Two celebrated tuners are Wintons Simon
and Ellie Mannette. Split tuning involves tuning half of a single (pan) drum today and
tuning the other have tomorrow. It is a quick job and usually takes about 4 to 6 hours
to tune a band of about 120 players.
