Catholic artist were encouraged to create religious art while protestants artists focused on secular subjects who commissioned protestant artists

Protestant religious are were more secular in nature.  Rather than portray saints, they tried to interpret religious stories in a more secular setting.  Artists like Rembrandt were commissioned by Protestants to paint such portraits.  It depicted secular setting with Christian messages and teachings.
