As you know, different psychological theories reflect different perspectives about psychological development, psychological health, and psychological disorders. More specifically, different psychological theories point to different origins of mood disorders. For example, the psychoanalytic perspective suggests mood disorders result from repressed anger; the behavioral theory suggests mood disorders originate from learned helplessness; and the cognitive theory suggests mood disorders originate from self-defeating thinking patterns and the effects of social and environmental stresses. Discuss the value of these different perspectives. Do they make it easier or more difficult to identify problems with mood? Do they make it easier or more difficult to provide treatment? Which perspective do you think is the most helpful in explaining and or treating mood disorders?
