To assess the effects of building an eco-lodge on a cliff, you will build a model of the situation using ordinary materials, including soil, water, and a container or tray. Remember that you need to include a control group (a model without an eco-lodge). This will allow you to compare the experimental group results with the control group. You will need to decide what the cliff’s soil profile looks like; model the conditions of wave action and wind in terms of soil erosion; and decide on a time frame to model.
As part of your model, you will write a hypothesis that is a testable statement, and then describe the steps you will take to test your hypothesis. This is an ideal opportunity to check with your teacher to see if your hypothesis is testable, and if your steps will lead to an accurate test.
When your hypothesis and steps are approved, carry out your experiment using your model. You will want to perform two to five trials of the experiment.
In your lab report, include your initial observations, hypothesis, dependent and independent variables, and results and discussion.
Use the checklist below to guide your work.
