Imagines Technological Change The turn of the twentieth century prompted widespread speculation about the shape
of the future, which focused heavily on technology, at least in the West. In 1900, an
article in the Ladies Home Journal, an American women's magazine, predicted "What
May Happen in the Next Hundred Years." Those predictions included cities with all
hurry traffic below or high above ground ... free from all noises"; automobiles
cheaper than horses; "aerial war-ships and forts on wheels", "photographs will be
telegraphed from any distance"; "strawberries as large as apples"; "wireless
telephone ... will span the world"; the end of coal for heating and cooking, and much
more. In 1910, the French artist Maximilian Villemard gave visual expression to such
predictions in a series of postcards depicting life in Paris in the year 2000. Five of the
