The Lindy Hop has a long and interesting history. The Lindy Hop started in 1926 at the Savoy Ballroom in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. It's a type of swing dance that grew from the earlier swing dances, the Breakaway and the Charleston. It's fast, fun, and full of spectacular moves. The Breakaway was renamed the Lindy Hop in 1927 in honor of Charles Lindbergh's famous flight across the Atlantic Ocean. As Lindy Hoppers tried to outperform each other, they invented new moves. In fact, the dance was banned from the main dance floor at the Savoy because the dancing took up too much space. But soon everyone wanted to dance the Lindy, so the owners of the club moved it to the main dance floor. After World War II (1939–1945), jazz music developed from swing into bebop that people no longer danced to. But in the 1980s, the Lindy Hop had a revival.
