The textile industry exploded during the Industrial Revolution, which started in England in the 1800's, and then spread around the world. The industry began with handmade cloth. usually produced in homes. The invention of the silk mill was the introduction of technology into the textile industry and allowed cloth to be produced much more quickly. Throughout the years, more and more technology was developed and used to further streamline the process of making cloth. Therefore, one reason the textile industry was significant was that it motivated the development of new technology. In addition, the growth of the textile industry because of technology spread all over the world. Because of it, many poverty-stricken and unemployed people were able to get good-paying jobs. Often, these jobs become vocations that are handed down from generation to generation. Lastly, cities grew because of the textile industry, as people moved out of the country into the city to work in the textile factories.
